Allison Lenore Annalora (then known as Larry Duane Miller) was given up for adoption at birth in May of 1955. In January of 1992, after a lengthy search for her biological mother, in anticipation of their meeting for the first time, "he" started a journal. Both of "his" alcoholic adoptive parents had passed and at long last "he" hoped for closure. This journal evolved over time into a story of survival, courage, self-discovery and happiness. As therapeutic as the process of writing this has been for her, everybody she knows encouraged her to tell her story to the world. Her intent is that the reader will be inspired and enlightened and will understand that despite adversity, life can be beautiful. She has survived being raised by alcoholic adoptive parents and an abusive childhood; struggling with gender identity issues; addiction being shunned by peers; the beginning of the AIDS epidemic; lifelong persecution by closed-minded people because "he" chose to live life openly as a feminine gay "male" and now as her transgender woman self. After she experienced the joy of finding her birth family, Allison's beloved biological half-sister Leslie Shawn was brutally murdered. In the end, Allison discovered the courage to leave a loving, long-term gay relationship to transition to my true self. This is her story.

Never having written a review of a book before, I'm not really sure where to begin. I am an avid reader and have been since childhood. I am a 66 year old, heterosexual grandmother who just couldn't put this book down. It should be a text book for ALL to read on the good and bad side of life. It covers everything from child abuse, alcoholism, drug use, bullying and AIDS to hope, love, acceptance and so much more. It is written in everyday language that does not require a dictionary to understand what is so lovingly written. Allison, I don't know how you survived all you have lived and came out on the other side to be the person who was always inside you. I hope that transgender young people find this book. It could save many young lives. On New Years Eve, where I live, a 19 year old transgender woman took her own life. If she had read this book, she might be alive today. Thanks Allison for sharing so much of yourself to benefit others. Well done!Mary Bensusen-Page

Late Blooming My Gender Journey A Memoir Ms Allison Lenore Annalora Kristin Johnson Lena Ingram Brian Blueskye 9780692822739 Books Reviews
The book is a little different from others I have read. The author sort of uses a lot of names which become hard to keep track of. It was an okay book, but I have read better transgender books.
An impressive collection of brave and very honest memories with lessons of growth and healing. Allison's life is one of many highs and lows as she reflects back to her earliest memories at age 3 and now to her current life of happiness she fought hard for and deserves. At times I laughed, I definitely cried and was captivated page after page. What an incredible example of being true to one's self, no matter how impossible it may seem, and her inspiration and encouragement for anyone else to do the same.
I read very few books. However, once I started reading Allison's book, I found it hard to put down. Her story is fascinating from beginning to end, and her perseverance admirable. She knew what she wanted almost from birth, and her story captures the tremendous obstacles she overcame to finally reach true contentment and happiness in spite of societal barriers. Her book gives those of us on the outside an opportunity to look in and better understand with no holds barred. Many thanks to her for sharing her hard-fought journey with the rest of us.
No matter what your opinion is regarding the Transgender Community, this book will open your eyes and your heart to what it means to grow up in a body that doesn't match your mind and soul. You'll laugh and you'll cry as you follow the journey of little Larry Duane Miller as he struggles to make sense of a desire that flourishes only in his imagination. Your heart will melt as he encounters sweet souls along the way who offered respite and comfort in a world that didn't reward challenge and change.
The entirety of his story spans decades and is set against some of the darkest periods of LGBTQ history as it confronted the Anti-Gay Religious Right in the midst of the AIDS epidemic.
Whether you're gay, straight, transgender, or adopted, you'll enjoy the journey to the very end and smile when the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly.
An easy to read autobiography of Allison that walks you through her life, the good and the bad. It's author's like Allison that help us understand what it must be like to not be identified by the gender one feels is right. It's also people like Allison that help pave the way for others, so they know they are not alone. Thank you Allison for sharing your life with the world, you are a very special and beautiful woman!
"Late Blooming" My Gender Journey was an educational as well as interesting read which left me desiring more.
Allison Annalora has chronicled her first person account of a life most people know little to nothing of.
This is the recounting of her truly amazing journey. A journey which continues for her through a very hard fought for insight.
I recommend "Late Blooming" to everyone and hope to see the movie version soon.
Yes I do know Allison and have great respect for her bravery and humanity in recounting her journey to date.

Finished this book several weeks ago an have been thinking of what to say about it. Since I am personally connected to Ally she is my brother Rons girlfriend. I have heard many of the stories before but not in such detail. I can personally attest to the authenticity of their story. My brother has truly found his soul mate. As for Allisons ability to write Wow she can really involve the reader an allow you into her deepest feelings. Bravo my dear friend this book is a winner written with truth an just enough wit to keep the reader coming back for more. If you are looking for a book that will help you to understand what is like to literally be born into the wrong body this is it. I highly recommend it.
